DESCRIPTIONS

Personal Project is a long-term project which students work on in MYP4-5. The project needs to have a final product, and it has to be something challenging for you, as the project is an opportunity of growth in a specific area or a skill. For my Personal Project, I decided to cook meals from my home country, Japan, and put all the knowledge I have in one recipe book. This was quite challenging for me, because before I started this project, I had almost never cooked, but I had to do everything on my own once I decided to do so. However, even though there were some tough moments on the way, I still really enjoyed working on my project and am happy that I can share what I have done.

MOTIVATION

I first came up with the idea of making my project something related to food, because I love eating. But then, I realized that I had never cooked before on my own, even though I love eating everything. Therefore, I thought that the Personal Project was a great opportunity for me to start learning cooking. At the same time, I also had a strong passion that I wanted to share my own culture to the other people. I personally love my Japanese culture, and I really wanted people to be aware of its attractiveness. In order to combine both of my interests, what I came up was cooking and writing a recipe book. This was my motivation on starting the project.

PLANNING

At the beginning of the project, I made a long-term plan of what I was going to do until my final product is done.

My plan looks like:

  1. Choose a goal, global context and research question in the first three weeks of the project

  2. Carry out research and evaluate all the sources collected until the summer break is over

  3. Make a product criteria during the summer break

  4. Start cooking the meals when the summer break is over, and finish it by September

  5. Write down all the recipes I have and put them in one book two days before the deadline

GOAL

Once I decided the topic of my project, what I had to do first was setting a goal. The goal needs to be achievable, but also challenging for you. The one I set for my project is "To learn and develop my skills in cooking and create my own recipe book of Japanese homemade dishes. Then share my knowledge to people in a clear way for them to be able to cook those dishes by themselves at home."

RESEARCH QUESTION

Also, we came up with one research question to investigate throughout the project, and it needs to be relevant to your topic. My research question is "How can creating a recipe book improve one's cooking skills and techniques, and share knowledge about Japanese homemade dishes to others?"

GLOBAL CONTEXT

Among 6 different global contexts, I chose "Personal and cultural expression." This global context was the most relevant one to my project, because mine is about expressing and sharing the culture in my own way, which is cooking and making a recipe book.

INVESTIGATION

Before actually starting making a final product, what I did was conducting some research to find useful information for my project. To carry out research effectively, I came up with 4 different questions:

  • What are some basic cooking knowledge and techniques? What should I know before I start cooking?

  • What is important to know when cooking Japanese food?

  • What are some common Japanese homemade dishes?

  • How should I write a recipe book

Doing this helped me a lot, because  I could have a clear idea of what information I was going to find when I started research, and I did not have to waste my time.

While researching, I used different types of sources, such as internet, recipe books by others, interviews and videos.
When I finished all the research, I evaluated each source to see how valuable and reliable they are.

PRODUCT CRITERIA

In order to find out whether my final product was a success or not, I made a product criteria which helps me to judge the product objectively.

QUALITY OF THE DISHES

To measure the quality of the dishes I cooked, I will some people to judge them from 1 to 5 (5 is the best quality) from 4 different aspects which are important for meals to have:

  • Presentation (appearance of the dishes)

  • Aroma

  • Texture

  • Taste

STATE OF THE BOOK

-Having more than 10 recipes
-Having more than 10 pictures
-Making it look like an actual recipe book (not just printed papers stapled)

QUALITY OF THE BOOK

I will release a short survey to a range of people to judge my book by using the scale 1-5 (5 is the best). In a survey, I will include questions regarding:

  • Quality of the picture I took

  • How clear and understandable my recipes are

TAKING ACTION

After making a plan, defining my goals and the criteria and researching relevant information, I entered the action phase and started working on my final product. Although my final product is a recipe book, I had to do not only writing recipes, but actually cooking and taking some pictures of the meals as a part of my goal is learning and developing my skills in cooking. Therefore, my action phase started with cooking the meals I chose to include in my recipe book. My initial plan was cooking everything first and writing recipes after that, but on the half way, I realized that I can use time more wisely if I start writing a recipe when I'm done with making that meal, so in the middle of September, I was still cooking, but writing recipes at the same time.
Another change I made in this action phase was adding extra contexts in the book. Initially, I was planning of just putting recipes and pictures, but when I began making a recipe, I thought that it is better to explain about the seasonings I use to the readers, because many of them are Japanese and people might have never heard of. Also, I wanted to include how to cook rice, as rice is used in many recipes but I expect that most readers do not have rick cookers at home. When I finished cooking and writing 10 recipes and achieved the criteria I set, I still had time to add a few more, but instead of adding extra recipes, I chose to include "seasonings" and "how to cook rice" pages for readers to be able to understand everything easily.
When making an actual recipe book, I typed everything on my laptop, then printed them on A4 papers and put them in a folder to organize. Since each printed page was too simple at the beginning, I used stickers, highlighters,  and tapes to decorate my recipe book.
